Located at the Eastern fringes of Bangkok, about 6 kilometers from the Suvarnabhumi Airport, lies the Metro-Forest Project. An ecological regeneration project designed as an outdoor exhibition space of approximately 60,000 trees of more than 279 unique species to cultivate environmental awareness and educate visitors about local forest ecology. The project aimed to reclaim 2-hectares of abandoned land and reverse the trends of suburban sprawl, urban heat island, and flood-prone developments through the incorporation of historically local (native and introduced) lowland tropical tree species. To create diverse forest ecology, the planting techniques of saplings by Dr. Akira Miyawaki were implemented for optimal growing environments of lowland dipterocarp by designing a terrain of engineered berms.Lecturer: Mr. Tawatchai Kobkaikit Managing Director, TK Studio Design
Tawatchai has extensive experience in landscape architecture both in Thailand and abroad. His practice has ranged from master plans to small garden designs. His design philosophy lies in art and culture and the environment from which they have emerged, and his approach to design methodology is to look first at natural processes. His belief in mixing the influences of culture and human behavior with natural process was first expressed in his Master of Landscape Architecture thesis, a study entitled “Wind as a Natural Process and Symbol: A Design Study of Northerly Island, Chicago”. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Chulalongkorn University in 1993 and received his Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1996. He returned to Chulalongkorn as a teacher from 1996 to 2000, then returned to the US to work for the architecture firm NBBJ in Columbus, Ohio, during 2000 and 2001, and moved to Dallas, Texas, to work for the SWA Group from 2001 to 2005. He then returned to Bangkok and is now managing director of LAB.
This excursion is to visit 2 award winning reforestation projects based on Dr. Akira Miyawaki’s method. ‘TOYOTA ECO FOREST’ and its 8 years old and nearing the mature stage of 10-year old forest will give you a very clear idea of how this method of reforestation works.Lecturer: Mr. Namchai Saensupha Director, Shma Co.,Ltd
